DeWITT TWP. — After several years of flight cutbacks, dropped service and high fares that made travel from other cities more affordable, Lansing’s airport is on a bit of an upswing.
Passenger traffic at Capital Region International Airport climbed 8 percent in 2012, airport officials reported, marking the second consecutive year of growth after two years of sharp declines. And airport officials hope to sustain that trend this year, though popular low-fare carrier Southwest Airlines Co.’s entry to into the Flint and Grand Rapids markets could draw passengers away from Lansing.

LANSING – Capital Region International Airport forecasts an increase of approximately 13 percent in total passenger volumes for December 2012 and January 2013 during the winter holiday travel season, based on a year-to-date ridership analysis.

2012-13 Winter Schedule on flights from Capital Regional International Airport, including twice weekly nonstop service to Las Vegas, Nevada, beginning December 27, 2012, as well as weekly nonstop

The U.S. Department of Transportation has approved an appeal by the Capital Region Airport Authority for new runway slots that will allow Sun Country Airlines to continue nonstop daily flight service year-round from Lansing to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. Capital Region Airport Authority Board Chair Chris Holman and Sun Country Airlines President and CEO Stan Gadek hailed the Transportation Department’s approval as vital to maintaining low fares and convenient schedules for passengers.
