Melissa Meaton of St. Johns Wins Capital Region International Airport’s “Mom’s Day Fly Away” Contest, $1,000 Flight Voucher
LANSING, Mich. – Lansing’s Capital Region International Airport announced today the winner of the inaugural “Mom’s Day Fly Away” Contest. Melissa Meaton, a 21-year-old Lansing Community College radiology student and resident of St. Johns, is the recipient of a $1,000 Fly Lansing flight voucher.
“We received a lot of great submissions for the ‘Mom’s Day Fly Away’ Contest,” said Nicole Noll-Williams, Capital Region International Airport’s director of regional market development. “It was very difficult to narrow down the field, but Melissa made a great case for why her mother deserved this prize. They are an inspiring mother-daughter team, and we’re excited to send them on vacation together.”
Meaton submitted a 150-word essay about her mother, Lori Meaton, a 20-year employee and assistant manager at the Sparrow Pediatric Subspecialty Clinic. She learned about the contest from one of her mother’s work colleagues, who sent a sealed envelope home with her mother, providing specific directions to deliver the envelope to Melissa.
Meaton’s colleague, Janet Goodell, read about the contest in the local media and thought that her co-worker would be a perfect candidate.
In her essay, Meaton praised her mom, calling her “a modern day Wonder Woman” who juggled work demands while still being a “devoted wife to her husband (Rick) and three children (Melissa, Matt, 19, and 16-year-old Nick).” In addition to her roles of wife and mom, Lori Meaton also has a special duty at Sparrow.
“My mom is the woman who can put a smile on the most-troubled of faces,” Melissa wrote.
“Outside of work, she spends her personal time putting together layouts and buying supplies to design clinic bulletin boards. Those boards help make the younger children to feel more at ease and relaxed when they arrive at the clinic.”
Lori said she was overwhelmed when she heard that her daughter had entered and won the “Mom’s Day Fly Away” Contest.
“It means more than I could ever put into writing,” said Meaton. “My mother (Melissa’s grandmother, who passed away last November) taught me to always be giving to others and that nothing matters more than the love of your family. Melissa is so much like her. She’s carrying on her legacy.”
The Meatons are unsure exactly where they will go using their flight voucher, but they said they look forward to selecting a destination that will be special for them both.
On the heels of announcing the winner of the “Mom’s Day Fly Away” Contest, Capital Region International Airport is accepting similar essays for the first “Father’s Day Fly Away” Contest. Entrants are asked to describe – in 150 words or less – why their father is so special. The winning submission will receive a $1,000 travel voucher from Fly Lansing.
Essays may be submitted online at FlyLansing.com/dad or at the Fly Lansing Concierge Travel Center, located at the Capital Region International Airport. The deadline for entries is Friday, June 7, 2013.
Entrants are encouraged to include photos of their dads when they submit their essays, as well as share their entries on Facebook. Official contest rules are detailed on the contest website.
